Inhaca Ocean Alliance NPC in Action

Turn-the-Tide Ocean Education

Coastal Waste Resilience with AMOR

Coastal Waste Resilience with AMOR

Empowering Youth Through Ocean Education

Every child on the island deserves to know basic ocean awareness and swimming skills to safely enjoy their coastal environment.

Turn-the-Tide is Inhaca Ocean Alliance’s flagship programme, designed to educate and empower young people on Inhaca Island through ocean awareness, swimming teaching, and environmental stewardship. Over an 8-week journey, local children learn about tides, currents, marine life, plastic pollution, and water safety—all while gaining confidence in the ocean.

Led by trained local instructors, the programme combines classroom sessions with hands-on activities, including swimming lessons, beach clean-ups, and marine exploration. It’s about building not only skills, but a deep respect for the sea and a sense of responsibility to protect it.

By nurturing the next generation of ocean guardians, Turn the Tide creates lasting change—within individuals, families, and the wider coastal community.

Inhaca Ocean Alliance partners with AMOR (Associação Moçambicana de Reciclagem) to run their innovative Coastal Waste Resilience Programme on Inhaca Island.

These events focus on removing ocean-borne waste, protecting marine ecosystems, and engaging local communities in environmental action.

Each clean-up brings together the community, volunteers, and recycling experts to collect, sort, and responsibly dispose of waste. Community members are paid for the waste they bring to the clean-up events, according to the type of waste that is collected.

More than just clean beaches, these events build awareness, provide income for the local communities, create job opportunities, and inspire long-term change. Together, we’re turning the tide—one clean-up at a time.

The collaboration between AMOR and Inhaca Ocean Alliance is a powerful example of how clean‑up events and education programmes work hand‑in‑hand. Together they engage local youth and communities, remove significant amounts of marine litter, and help build long-term awareness and capacity for ocean stewardship in Mozambique’s coastal regions.

Swimming saves lives.

And its fun!

We teach our children swimming skills during their Turn-the-Tide programme and aim to equip every child on the island with the valuable ability to swim.

TURN-THE-TIDE LESSONS FOR VISITING SCHOOLS

TURN-THE-TIDE LESSONS FOR VISITING SCHOOLS

One of our big dreams is to connect the people of Maputo to their surrounding natural environment, specifically their ocean and close by island paradise.

We offer lessons from our Turn-the-Tide Ocean Programme to children on school trips visiting Inhaca from Maputo and Matola, as well as smaller lessons for visitors and holiday makers.
